A Rose Tree Garden Captures Nobility
There was a time when a rose tree garden was a commonplace sight in every garden. You could see rose trees in the vast formal gardens of palaces and in the houses of aristocrats and other wealthy people. They used to be a symbol of nobility, but were also nurtured by common folk. Today, they are few and far between. You’d be lucky to see them in your neighbor’s yard because only rose enthusiasts take the time to grow them. Standard rose trees represent what is a unique concept that is one of the most elegant creations of horticulture.
Rose trees are considered hybrid roses in the fact that they are incorporated into a rootstock through grafting. The goal here is to make it resemble a mini-tree and control its growth through occasional pruning. The whole process of grafting and pruning a rose tree garden requires a great deal of your time and effort, but the results are totally worth it. The tree grows into nice, thick foliage that adds beauty and sophistication into your garden.
Taking care of a rose tree garden isn’t much different than other forms of rose bush care. They also need pruning during early spring. They require the same watering, tending, protection from pests, and feeding as regular roses. But the pruning process is different because they are larger and have an unusual shape. Make sure to use sharp shears when pruning rose trees; using a dull tool can deform the cane and affect the quality of its offshoots. You can use bleach, water, and a toothbrush to maintain and clean the tools.
When you are about to cut a stem, position the shears at an angle of 45 degrees against its center. The purpose of this is to encourage growth outwards and not in the general direction of center of the stem. This also regulates air flow and reduces the possibility of contracting diseases. Remove stems that look like they are in the process of dying. This process prevents the spread of decay and allows the healthy canes to develop new growth. Regular pruning is necessary for the roses in your rose tree garden to continue having new blooms and to maintain their tree-like shape.
The wonderful thing about having a rose tree garden is that you can graft roses of different colors into the same tree. This produces an array of colors that will pique the curiosity of your visitors and make them admire your garden more. Having shades of red, yellow, and white in one tree is definitely eye-catching. You can have a nice combination of cascading and weeping rose trees in your garden.
The entire rose tree rests on its trunk. It is important to support the trunk and keep it hidden from the sun by placing trunk shading and a stake beside it. This technique allows the trunk to carry the weight of the rose tree without it being withered by the sun.
A rose tree garden creates a luxurious atmosphere around your home, and gives it a ‘royal’ appeal, making it seem like a throwback to the good, old days when rose trees graced mansions and grand palaces.
